Soma” is Greek for “body in its wholeness.”  The field of somatics refers to the study of the soma through deep personal explorations.  Somatics acknowledges that the body contains inherent wisdom that can be accessed through sensation whether it be bodywork, guided physical explorations, imagery work, or moving meditation.  Some familiar examples include Body-Mind Centering®, Global Somatics™, Klein Technique™, Feldenkrais Method®, Alexander Technique, and Skinner Releasing Technique.  In the dance field, the study of somatics was originally used to promote healing as well as easeful and mindful movement practices.  Since the 1970’s, these somatic practices have both expanded and deepened to have profound impact — from creating new income possibilities to re-imaging who we are and how we experience our world.
